On September 18, Britney Spears married with Kelvin Federline in a surprise wedding ceremony at a residence in studio city, California. Britney Spears and Kelvin filed their legal papers on October 6 of the same year.

Just after her marriage with Kelvin, Britney Spears announced that she would be taking a break in her career to raise the family. Britney Spears gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston Federline, at Santa Monica, California almost one year after the marriage. Two days after the first birthday of Sean, Britney Spears gave birth to her second son, Jayden James Federline in Los Angeles. In November 2006, Britney Spears filed for divorce from Kelvin and went on to commence a long battle for the custody of children.
